What
being
a
B
Corp
means
to
us

As B Corp Month comes to a close, we’ve enjoyed celebrating the incredible impact B Corp organisations are making, and the even more inspiring work still to come. It’s a good moment to reflect on what being a B Corp means for us at Jack & Grace.

The vibes are vibing

For us, being a B Corp means belonging to a community with a shared vision of the future. It’s like being in a room of likeminded people when the vibes are vibing. Gen-Z lingo aside, anyone who’s ever been to a B Corp event knows what we’re talking about.

We had the pleasure of hosting a fringe event at the first ever B Corp Festival in Oxford last year, and it was a brilliant experience. When B Corps come together, there’s no ego, no competition for the crown. We hold each other accountable and work together to build a fairer, more sustainable future.

What our team thinks

Jack & Grace is a small but mighty agency and being a B Corp is part of our identity – we were actually founded with the intention of certifying! Here’s what our team thinks about being a B Corp:

  • “It gives us a framework to articulate what an ethical business means in practice. It’s good to have an external measure in place, to test what we’re saying is what we’re actually doing.”
  • “It makes us feel less lonely, we’re part of a whole movement that wants to see a change in the way we work, live and consume.“
  • “It makes positive, purposeful change feel possible, knowing we all play a small but important role in improving standards.”

But it’s not all rainbows and butterflies…

Yes, we hear you, it all sounds a bit too idealistic. As our co-founder Nyree would say, “we B Corps like to come together and polish our halos”. But we also know that being a B Corp doesn’t mean we’re perfect – perfect doesn’t exist.

Our most recent impact report celebrated plenty of wins, but it also shone a light on the areas where we need to go further. We’re not blind to the wider challenges either, like well-known brands walking away from certification or the growing scrutiny around greenwashing. There have certainly been mistakes in the past and organisations have been rightfully removed from the B Corp list.

That’s why we welcome the launch of the new B Lab Standards and see this as good progression to make sure we all stay on the right side of business (we’ll be recertifying in September based on the new standards, and we’re here for the extra rigour and challenge).

At the end of the day, being a B Corp is about continuous improvement, which is exactly what we’re committed to. Certifying was just the start of the journey for us.
